What happens after the crime has been reported
The Gardaí investigate the matter. In serious incidents, once the investigation is complete, the Gardaí send a file to the DPP and the DPP decides whether or not to prosecute. These cases are often tried in the Circuit or Central Criminal Court but the DPP could decide to prosecute in the District Court. In some less serious crimes, the Gardaí can bring a prosecution in the District Court in the name of the DPP without having to submit a file to the DPP’s Office.
